Week 23 of Pregnancy
You're 23 weeks pregnant, and your baby is growing stronger each day—about the size of a grapefruit now! Tiny lungs are developing, your baby’s hearing is getting sharper, and those sweet little kicks are becoming more noticeable. As your belly expands, you might experience new symptoms like heartburn, mild swelling, or Braxton Hicks contractions. It’s a great time to begin preparing for baby’s arrival by researching pediatricians, practicing pelvic floor exercises, and enjoying this exciting stage of your journey.

Baby’s Size
Your baby is about the size of a large papaya.
Baby’s Development at 23 weeks
Lung Preparation Begins
Your baby’s lungs are developing tiny air sacs called alveoli, and they’re beginning to produce surfactant, a substance that will help them breathe after birth.
Hearing Is Sharpening
Your baby can now recognize familiar sounds like your voice and heartbeat more clearly, and might even respond with movement to loud noises.
Movement and Coordination
Your baby is getting stronger, and movements like kicks, flips, and rolls are becoming more coordinated and noticeable.
Skin is Becoming Less Transparent
While still wrinkled, your baby’s skin is gradually becoming less translucent as fat starts to accumulate under the surface.
Pregnancy Symptoms during Week 23
-
You may begin to notice mild, irregular tightening sensations in your abdomen. These "practice contractions" are your body's way of preparing for labor, but they’re usually painless and short-lived.
-
As your growing uterus pushes up against your stomach, you may experience frequent heartburn or acid reflux. Eating smaller meals and avoiding spicy or acidic foods can help.
-
Mild swelling in your feet, ankles, or hands is common due to fluid retention and slower circulation. Try to stay hydrated and elevate your feet when resting to ease the discomfort.
-
Your breasts may begin to leak small amounts of colostrum, the nutrient-rich early milk. This is normal and a sign that your body is preparing for breastfeeding.
Pregnancy checklist at 23 weeks pregnant
-
Start compiling a list of potential pediatricians or family doctors who will care for your baby after birth. Ask friends, family, or your care provider for recommendations and consider scheduling consultations.
-
Continue taking your daily prenatal vitamins, including iron and folic acid, to support your baby’s growth and your own health. If you’re experiencing constipation, ask your provider about alternatives.
-
Begin incorporating Kegel exercises into your daily routine to strengthen pelvic muscles. This can help with bladder control now and recovery after delivery.
-
Whether it’s journaling, taking weekly bump photos, or keeping a pregnancy app updated, documenting your pregnancy can be a beautiful way to bond with your baby and reflect on your progress.
23 Weeks Pregnant Belly
Your belly is continuing to grow outward, and your uterus now sits about 1.5 inches above your belly button. You may notice your skin stretching more, leading to itchiness or the appearance of new stretch marks. Wearing loose clothing and applying a good moisturizer daily can help soothe your skin.
