Week 14 of Pregnancy

You’re officially in the second trimester! Energy levels often begin to rise, and morning sickness may ease. As your baby grows, your belly might start showing a little more, and you may feel more like yourself again.

Baby’s Size

Your baby is about the size of a lemon.

Baby’s Development at 14 weeks

Facial expressions are forming

Baby’s tiny facial muscles are now active, allowing them to squint, frown, smile, and even make sucking motions. These early expressions are all part of developing reflexes and muscle tone.

Lanugo is growing

A fine, soft hair called lanugo starts to cover baby’s body. It helps regulate their temperature until fat stores develop later in pregnancy. This hair usually sheds before birth.

Neck is getting stronger

The baby's head is no longer resting on the chest as much. With the neck growing longer and stronger, you may see more defined features during an ultrasound.

Organ development continues

Vital organs are becoming more functional. The liver is producing bile, the spleen is helping create red blood cells, and the kidneys are starting to release urine into the amniotic fluid.

Pregnancy Symptoms during Week 14

  • Many people feel a noticeable boost in energy as the placenta takes over hormone production. It’s often called the “honeymoon phase” of pregnancy for this reason.

  • You might feel sharp or achy sensations in your lower belly or hips, especially when you move quickly. This is caused by ligaments stretching to support your growing uterus.

  • Extra blood volume and hormonal changes can cause your nasal passages to swell, leading to stuffiness or even mild nosebleeds. Staying hydrated and using a humidifier may help.

  • Your circulatory system is working harder, which can make your veins more noticeable, especially on your chest, arms, and belly. It’s completely normal and reflects your body’s increased blood flow to support baby.

Pregnancy checklist at 14 weeks pregnant

  • Now is a good time to book your next check-up. Your provider will likely measure your belly, check fetal heartbeat, and may discuss upcoming tests or ultrasounds.

  • Education is key to a confident birth. Explore your options now, whether it’s group learning or a private session. ChildbirthU’s 7-Week Prenatal Group Series or Private 1-on-1 Prenatal Class are great ways to feel informed and prepared.

  • If you’ve received the green light from your care provider, consider prenatal yoga, walking, or swimming. Regular movement can reduce pregnancy discomfort, improve mood, and help your body adapt to changes.

  • It may feel early, but browsing baby items and reading up on newborn care can help you feel more organized later. Our Preparing for Your New Arrival Guide is a great starting point for a practical and calm approach.

14 Weeks Pregnant Belly

By Week 14, your belly might be starting to show more clearly, especially if this isn’t your first pregnancy. Uterus is now rising above the pubic bone, which can make your bump feel more pronounced. It’s a great time to begin documenting your journey with bump photos if you haven't already.
