Week 42 of Pregnancy
You’ve officially reached post-term pregnancy. While it’s natural to feel restless, remember that up to 5–10% of pregnancies continue past 41 weeks. Your healthcare provider is likely monitoring you and baby closely through non-stress tests and ultrasounds. Your baby is still growing, and your body may be showing signs that labor is close. Stay calm, listen to your body, and know that you’ll be meeting your baby very soon.

Baby’s Size
Your baby is about the size of a red cabbage.

More Defined Features
Your baby’s nails, eyelashes, and hair are well-developed, and their facial features are clear and prominent.
Dry, Peeling Skin
Without the protective vernix, your baby’s skin may be dry, flaky, or wrinkled, this is normal for post-term infants.
Growing Stronger
Your baby continues gaining weight and building strength. They may weigh over 9 pounds now, depending on genetics and growth.
Reduced Amniotic Fluid
Amniotic fluid naturally decreases now, so providers monitor closely to ensure the placenta is still functioning well.
Pregnancy Symptoms during Week 42
-
Movements may feel more like rolls or shifts, but keep tracking them and alert your provider if they decrease.
-
Baby’s deep position can lead to strong pelvic pressure, nerve pain, and back discomfort.
-
Many experience increased cramping, backache, or early labor signs like a bloody show or cervical changes.
-
The physical strain and emotional toll of waiting can make you feel overwhelmed, this is very common in week 42.
-
Discomfort, anxiety, and frequent bathroom trips can make rest hard. Naps and relaxation breaks can help.

If labor hasn’t started naturally, your provider will likely recommend induction within the next few days for safety.
-
Keep track of daily fetal movements and attend all scheduled NSTs and ultrasounds to check fluid and placenta.
-
Emotional support is crucial, talk to your partner, doula, or a prenatal coach to work through your feelings.
-
Make sure your hospital bag is packed and easily accessible, labor could begin or be scheduled soon.
-
Even with induction, you can still make empowered decisions. Revisit your birth plan and communicate openly with your care team.
42 Weeks Pregnant Belly
Your belly may look slightly lower now as baby drops deeper into your pelvis. Stretching, itching, and pressure around your lower abdomen and pubic area can intensify. Some expectant parents feel clumsy or off-balance due to the baby's size and positioning. It’s okay to rest more and slow down, your body is doing the final work before labor.
